From Regional Action to Global Impact: Positioning Subnational Leaders for COP17 Global Review Process

Regions4 and ICLEI co-organized the session “From Regional Action to Global Impact: Positioning Subnational Leaders for COP17 Global Review Process,” held in the context of the RegionsWithNature launch. The event brought together subnational governments, CBD representatives, and international partners to highlight the strategic role of regions in the first global review of the GBF at COP 17. Participants explored how tools like the R4 Biodiversity Learning Platform, RegionsWithNature, and the Case Study Database enable reporting, showcase solutions, and ensure subnational contributions are recognized in national reports and global processes.

The session featured practical demonstrations, including Quebec’s experience sharing on using RegionsWithNature, and peer-to-peer exchange between subnational governments from Rio de Janeiro, California, Western Cape, and Scotland. High-level reflections from the CBD Secretariat highlighted that COP 17 is an opportunity to demonstrate accountability, highlight success stories, and identify areas requiring course correction, capturing the diversity of action happening on the ground across all levels of government.
