From Cali to Belem: Subnational Governments Leading Nature Action to Adapt to Climate Change

As climate change accelerates, the need for robust, actionable adaptation strategies at the subnational level has never been more critical. On November 16, 2024, the RegionsAdapt Progress Report 2024 will be launched, offering an in-depth look at members’ climate resilience achievements in connecting climate and nature.

Reporting Back to the Race to Resilience

In 2021, RegionsAdapt proudly joined the Race to Resilience as an official partner, aligning with the UN-backed global campaign spearheaded by the High-Level Climate Champions for Climate Action. This initiative is responding to the urgent need for coordinated action on climate adaptation, aiming to build resilience for 4 billion people in vulnerable groups and communities facing climate risks.

Since our partnership began, our annual progress reports stand as a testament to our unwavering commitment. Dive into the journey of how regional governments are fulfilling their RegionsAdapt commitments, making significant contributions to the global Race to Resilience Campaign. Explore the remarkable progress achieved since 2021, relying on data sourced from the CDP States and Regions Questionnaire.

Since 2021, 40 regional governments across 16 countries have disclosed their progress through the CDP States and Regions Questionnaires.

12 Stories of Impact on Climate and Nature Integration

Continuing the innovative approach introduced last year of incorporating a thematic layer into our reports – where the 2023 report centered on climate justice – this year’s edition aligns with the importance of Biodiversity COP16 and will explore the crucial connection between nature and climate. This thematic focus reflects the understanding that biodiversity is not only vital for ecological health but also plays an essential role in climate adaptation and resilience.

Drawing insights from 40 reporting members, the report presents 12 compelling case studies that demonstrate how strategies addressing both biodiversity and climate adaptation can drive effective solutions. From ecosystem restoration to nature-positive urban planning, these stories illustrate how integrating biodiversity into climate adaptation can yield positive outcomes for both nature and communities.

Several stories from the RegionsAdapt Progress Report are also featured in this year’s RegionsVoice campaign. Discover a selection of these stories below, and visit the full RegionsVoice campaign page to explore them all.
