Regions4 is committed to making a powerful impact at the Summit of the Future. By showcasing the strength of subnational governments, Regions4 demonstrates that regional contributions are essential to achieving global sustainability goals. Our initiatives highlight the critical role of regional efforts in creating a sustainable, just, and equitable future for all.

1.  Third meeting of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on Local and Regional Governments
📅  19 September (10:00 – 11:00 EST) | Venue: UN Headquarters
The 4th deliverable of the Advisory Group will be presented, containing recommendations to inform the deliberations of Member States in the lead up to the Summit of the Future on a United Nations global strategy for the engagement of local and regional governments. The discussions will focus on synthesizing input from previous consultations and ensuring that the recommendations are bold, actionable, and reflective of diverse needs and realities. Read more

 2. ​World Assembly of Local and Regional Governments
📅  19 September (10:00 – 18:00 EST) | Venue: Conference Room 3, UN Headquarters
The World Assembly will gather global leaders of local, regional, and governments to discuss and inform of their contributions to “Our Common Agenda” and the outcomes of the Advisory Group’s work. The three morning sessions will cover the connections with localization of building a peaceful, sustainable, and digital future. The afternoon will focus on the Advisory Group and the involvement of local and regional governments in the UN multilateral system. Agenda here

 3. Global Challenges, Regional Solutions – Regions leading on Future-proof policymaking
📅  20 September (14:30 EST)  | Venue: Flanders House
In an independent side event co-organized by Regions4 and the Government of Flanders, regional leaders will convene to discuss the potential of subnational governments to project themselves into the future. The stories of leading regions in providing future-proof policies and implementing the SDGs will be followed by a high-level discussion on the role of Regional Governments in localizing the Pact for the Future. The event will culminate in the launch of a joint initiative by Regions4 and UN-Habitat to support Regions in developing capacity and attracting investments to deliver transformative action.A reception will take place in the venue straight after the event (16:30-18:30). 4. Shaping local pathways for a more equitable, sustainable and secure future for all – “Localizing the Pact for the Future”
📅  21 September (9:45 – 11:00 EST)  | Venue: Conference Room 3, UN Headquarters
The event will involve the broader spectrum of local actors that support SDG implementation on the ground, connected globally through the Local2030 Coalition and other networks and coalitions of non-state actors. Local and Regional Governments will showcase successful strategies that contribute to driving impactful local action aligned with the SDG Transitions and engine room actions.

 5. Summit of the Future official sessions

The official negotiations of the Summit will discuss the final drafts of the Pact for the Future, the Declaration on Future Generations, and the Digital Global Compact. Political leaders from around the World will renew their commitment for a peaceful, equitable, and sustainable future, with a strong focus on the involvement of young and future generations in decision making.

 7. Resilience Day at Climate Week NYC – Free access/Join here
The Resilience Hub and the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) are hosting a flagship event as part of Climate Week NYC. The main focus will be on the connection between finance and nature, to promote sustainable financial strategies to mitigate and adapt to environmental changes. The sessions will emphasize the integration of green investments and nature-based solutions to enhance the adaptive capacity of vulnerable ecosystems and communities. They will also include an Investor Forum funded by GEF/UNDP for a growing pipeline of resilience solutions. 

Climate Week NYC

Climate Week NYC is the largest annual climate event of its kind, bringing together over 500 events and activities across the City of New York – in person, hybrid and online. Each year, business leaders, political change makers, local decision takers and civil society representatives of all ages and backgrounds, from all over the world, gather to drive the transition, speed up progress, and champion change that is already happening. 2024 Theme: It’s Time.
