Ecological ICMS: Paraná State’s Environmental Tax Revenue Sharing Program

The “ICMS Ecológico” (Ecological ICMS) was created in Paraná in 1991 as a mechanism for distributing resources derived from a type of tax revenue (ICMS) to municipalities that host Protected Areas and/or serve as sources of water supply for neighboring cities. This initiative aims to encourage the expansion of Protected Areas and to enhance the sustainable management of natural resources within Paraná.
