In a resounding commitment to combat climate change, the Government of the State of Baja California Sur (Mexico), in collaboration with the Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC), recently hosted the First State Climate Action Day on April 28 and 29, 2023. This initiative underlines the state’s dedication to environmental preservation and positions it as a pioneering force in the global effort against climate change. 

Empowering Communities through Awareness: During this significant event, there was a call to promote actions that not only raise awareness about climate change within the broader community but also prioritize the opinions of the most vulnerable communities and municipalities. The State Governor emphasized the crucial need for unified efforts to safeguard the environment, recognizing that sustainable development hinges on such a collective vision. Formalizing Commitments: To solidify its commitment, the Government officially established the new Climate Change Directorate on May 31, 2023, demonstrating dedication to addressing climate challenges and integrating climate considerations into governance. Laying Legislative Foundations: In a progressive step, the State Government presented the proposal for the Climate Change Law to the State Congress on July 25, 2023. This legislative initiative, supported financially by the Mexico UK-PACT Program from the Government of the United Kingdom, and in collaboration with Political and Environmental Legislation (POLEA), underscores the state’s commitment to comprehensive climate action.  

International Collaboration for Regulatory Strength: Thanks to the support of the UK-PACT Program and collaboration with POLEA, Baja California Sur has the unique opportunity to fortify its State regulatory framework on climate change. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on August 22, 2023, between the Secretariat of Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Mobility, Environment, and Natural Resources (SEPUIMM) and POLEA, sets the stage for the development of the Regulation of the Climate Change Law of the State of Baja California Sur.
