Nestled in the calm, sapphire waters of the Gulf of Bothnia, the Åland Islands – an archipelago of over 6,700 islands – paint a picture of tranquil coexistence and sustainable prosperity. Here, peace is not just a historical artifact or a political label but a living, breathing reality that cultivates a unique blend of harmony, innovation, and environmental stewardship. Yet, despite this peaceful image, Åland faces real challenges and environmental threats like eutrophication and high emissions. These issues connect Åland to global crises, driving the region’s commitment to sustainability. In response, Åland launched its Development and Sustainability Agenda in 2016, embracing the vision that “Everyone Can Flourish.”

The Story of a Community striving for Harmony Amidst unique Challenges

In the heart of Åland, Mariehamn, the archipelago’s capital, hums with a rhythm of calm and purpose. Throughout its history, Ålanders, comprising a total population of approximately 30,000 inhabitants, have maintained a strong bond with the land and sea. This connection is evident not only in its vital maritime shipping industry but also in a diverse range of economic activities reflecting the region’s entrepreneurial spirit. Yet, it is not just this connection with nature that reflects the island’s commitment to peace and sustainability; it is the spirit of its people. In Åland’s there is the widespread recognition that humans are part of nature, with 90% of citizens believing it’s their responsibility to protect biodiversity. This commitment is reflected in the fact that around 65% of the region’s electricity comes from locally sourced renewable energy.

While Åland is often celebrated for its natural beauty, the high level of trust between its people, the quality of education and health care and collective commitment to well-being and the environment, a closer look reveals pressing challenges. Violence in close relationships, along with persistent discrimination, corruption, and gender inequality, remain issues. The environment is also under strain, with eutrophication threatening its waters and high per capita greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, Åland consumption patterns have far-reaching impacts beyond its borders, highlighting the island’s deep connection to global crises like peace, democracy, climate, and economic inequality.

Recognizing the growing uncertainty, Åland began a long-term transition to sustainability in the early 2010s. In 2014, the Parliament unanimously affirmed this commitment, leading to the creation of the Development and Sustainability Agenda for Åland in 2016 – an Agenda drawn up by the people living and working on Åland. From this effort, the idea that “Everyone Can Flourish” was born.

Everyone Can Flourish: A Model of Peace and Sustainability

Åland’s unique status as an autonomous, demilitarized region of Finland is more than just a political arrangement – it is a deliberate choice that fosters conditions for everyone to thrive. This peace is embedded in the Åland Example, an example of autonomy, demilitarisation and neutralisation as well as minority protection, that offers valuable lessons for conflict management and sustainable development.

The concept of “Everyone Can Flourish” resonates deeply in Åland. It embodies an ethical vision where peace and sustainability are intertwined, where every individual and community has the opportunity to thrive. This vision is not merely an aspiration but a practical guide that shapes Åland’s policies and initiatives.

In practice, this vision translates into concrete goals and actions. Yet, transitioning to a society that embraces the vision  of “Everyone Can Flourish” often requires a paradigm shift for individuals. That is why institutions in Åland recognize that empowering individuals and communities through participatory methods is key. For instance, Åland’s local government, businesses, and civil society organizations work together to promote sustainable development, from reducing carbon footprints to enhancing local biodiversity.

“It is imperative that every segment of society actively participates in the enduring transformation process following the adoption of this shared vision and goals. Such participation not only fosters consensus but also nurtures trust, both within society and in the relationship between the government and its populace” explains the Åland Voluntary Review 2024.

Åland stands as a testament to the idea that peace is more than the mere absence of conflict; it is about creating conditions where everyone – human and nature – can thrive. The islands’ approach to sustainable development, rooted in their unique political status and cultural values, offers a blueprint for other regions grappling with similar challenges. As the UN Summit of the Future seeks to shape a world where the SDGs are realized, Åland stands as an everyday example of how peace and sustainable development can be harmoniously planned and achieved. Åland’s collaborative spirit, where individuals, artists, farmers, civil society organizations, educators, municipalities, businesses, government agencies, and political leaders unite, embodies a powerful commitment to environmental preservation, social inclusivity, and autonomous governance. This collective effort serves as an inspiring example for other regions, showing how diverse voices can come together to shape a shared vision and build a sustainable future for all.

At the heart of the UN’s 2030 Agenda, sustainable development is key to creating a future where no one is left behind. Åland, through its “Everyone Can Flourish” model, exemplifies how prosperity and sustainability can coexist, offering a hopeful roadmap for regions to replicate. Åland’s experience is a testament to the transformative power of commitment, collaboration, and a shared vision, proving that by working together, we can achieve a future where peace and sustainability go hand in hand – an inspiring example of how regions and communities across the world can come together to create a future where no one is left behind.
